Tyson Fury, the reigning lineal and WBC champion, will fight Francis Ngannou, a former champion of the UFC, in an exhibition bout in Saudi Arabia on Saturday. The fight will be televised by ESPN+.
Since stopping Dillian Whyte in April 2022, Fury has won two fights in a row. He also stopped Derek Chisora in December of that year. He was supposed to fight for the undisputed title against Oleksandr Usyk, but negotiations for the fight collapsed in March. Instead, Fury focused his attention on Ngannou.
Mike Coppinger of ESPN reported that the fight will be held inside a boxing ring. It will have three ringside judges. The judges will utilize the 10-point rating system for the bout.
During a press conference on September 7, Fury predicted that Ngannou would be a very good fighter. He noted that the former mixed martial arts fighter is in great shape and will be a difficult opponent. Although he is used to facing boxers, this will be the first time he will be facing an MMA fighter.
Ngannou, who is currently based in Las Vegas, became the UFC’s heavyweight champion in March 2021. He won the title after defeating Stipe Miocic. He then defended it against Ciryl Gane in January 2022. He then left the organization and signed with the Professional Fight League.
In an interview, Ngannou talked about his desire to become a boxer since he was very young. He noted that he would often ignore what was happening around him, but he is now focused on making history.
